HISTORY OF GLIIFCAIn 1992, Carleton and Sigrid Stewart and Alex Nakeff founding GLIFCA, the Great Lakes International Flow Cytometry Association with the first meeting held September 25th to 27th, 1992 at the Hotel St. Regis in Detroit. The tone of all future meetings was set from the start: have good lectures at an affordable meeting price, recognize upcoming graduate students and post-doc's and provide a Saturday evening social event. The next year, the meeting was held jointly with the South Central Flow Cytometry Association. In 1994, two changes to the organization occurred. First, a focus on Imaging was added, and GLIIFCA was formally born. Secondly, the Saturday evening party was given a theme, (that year was the TOGA FLOWDOWN), and another GLIIFCA tradition was born. In 2001, GLIIFCA was forced to move from it's long time home of Hotel St. Regis which was undergoing renovation, and thus began a new nomadic tradition for the GLIIFCA meeting, rotating through several cities, to settle on a new three year rotation that began in 2004 (Windsor, Ontario), 2005 (Milwaukee), 2006 (Pittsburgh), to be repeated for the foreseeable future. In 1996, GLIIFCA started having a guest lecture on Friday Evening. In 2003, with the retirement of Carleton and Sigrid Steward, the Keynote address was renamed the 'Carleton and Sigrid Stewart Plenary Lecture'. In recognition of his long-time service to GLIIFCA and support of young investigators, the GLIIFCA Steering Committee announced the formation of the 'Alexander Nakeff Young Investigators Award', to be given annually starting in 2008.
